Landry LS100G3 Used

Some boutique amplifiers become interesting because they're rare. Others become interesting because the person who designed and built them made the amplifier just a little different from the standard version.

This Landry LS100G3 is one of those amps.

Hand-built in the USA and designed by Bill Landry, the LS100G3 is a 100-watt, EL34-powered, three-channel tube amplifier designed to move convincingly from British-inspired clean and edge-of-breakup tones through serious crunch and into high-gain territory.

But this particular LS100G3 has something extra.

While the amplifier was being built, Bill Landry personally customized several details specifically for this amp. The normal channel-indicator LED colors were changed purely for aesthetics, with Blue LEDs representing the Red Mode and Purple LEDs representing the Yellow Mode on both the amplifier and its footswitch. Bill also added an additional Bright switch specifically for the Yellow Mode, providing an extra level of tonal adjustment beyond the standard configuration.

Those aren't aftermarket modifications.

They were incorporated by Bill Landry himself during the original build of this amplifier.

THE LS100G3 – A BOUTIQUE AMP BUILT FOR PLAYERS

The Landry LS100G3 grew from a deceptively simple objective: create one amplifier capable of delivering genuinely convincing clean sounds and equally serious overdrive without forcing the player to compromise either side of the equation.

That's considerably more difficult than it sounds.

Many high-gain amplifiers provide an acceptable clean channel. Many exceptional clean amplifiers can be pushed into overdrive. Far fewer are designed from the beginning to make both ends of that spectrum equally important.

Bill Landry's LS100 platform was developed around that challenge.

By the third-generation LS100G3, the design had evolved into a sophisticated three-channel amplifier capable of covering vintage-inspired cleans, British-flavored breakup, aggressive rhythm tones and serious high gain.

THIS ONE HAS THE “DIRTY CLEAN”

An especially important detail about this particular LS100G3 is its Dirty Clean configuration.

Rather than focusing exclusively on pristine, high-headroom clean tones, the Dirty Clean configuration takes the clean channel in a more British-inspired direction.

Keep the gain under control and there is plenty of usable clean territory.

Begin pushing it and the amplifier transitions naturally toward edge-of-breakup sounds before moving into increasingly aggressive British-style crunch.

For a player who actually uses the guitar's volume control and picking dynamics, that makes the first channel considerably more than a place to go when distortion isn't required.

It becomes another expressive gain stage.

RED & YELLOW – WITH A CUSTOM TWIST

The LS100G3 then provides its dedicated Red and Yellow gain modes.

The Red side handles the lower-gain territory, providing everything from muscular rhythm sounds through saturated overdrive.

Yellow takes the amplifier further, providing additional gain and/or volume that can be configured for more aggressive rhythm work, singing lead tones or simply another distinct level of saturation.

But when you look at this particular amplifier, something appears different.

BLUE IS RED. PURPLE IS YELLOW.

That's not a mistake.

When this LS100G3 was originally being built, Bill Landry changed the indicator LEDs specifically for this amplifier.

The Red Mode uses a Blue LED.

The Yellow Mode uses a Purple LED.

And Bill carried the same custom color scheme over to the footswitch, so the amplifier and foot controller match.

Importantly, this was done purely for aesthetics.

The LED colors do not indicate a different circuit or altered gain structure. Red remains the Red Mode and Yellow remains the Yellow Mode—the visual indicators were simply customized during construction to give this particular LS100G3 a unique appearance.

It's a small detail.

But on a hand-built boutique amplifier, small details like this are exactly what can make an individual example interesting years later.

AN EXTRA BRIGHT SWITCH – ADDED BY BILL LANDRY

The cosmetic LED customization isn't the only departure from the normal configuration.

Bill Landry also installed an additional Bright switch specifically for the Yellow Mode while building this amplifier.

Unlike the LED changes, this one is functional.

The additional Bright control gives the player another means of shaping the Yellow Mode's upper-frequency response, adding another useful degree of adjustment when dialing in higher-gain sounds.

That's particularly valuable when changing guitars or cabinets.

A darker humbucker-equipped instrument may benefit from additional presence and cut, while a naturally brighter guitar can be dialed differently.

Rather than requiring an external EQ or changing the basic amplifier settings, the additional Yellow Mode Bright switch provides another tonal option directly from the amplifier.

And again, the important part of the story is who installed it.

This isn't an aftermarket modification performed years later.

It was added by Bill Landry while this specific amplifier was being made.

100 WATTS OF EL34 AUTHORITY

The LS100G3 is built around a 100-watt EL34 power section, giving it the authority and response associated with a serious full-powered tube head.

There's a reason many great high-gain amplifiers retain large output sections.

Power isn't simply about volume.

The additional headroom contributes to the way the low end stays together, the way palm-muted passages respond and the way complex chords retain definition as preamp gain increases.

That muscular EL34 foundation is an important part of the LS100G3 experience.

THREE CHANNELS WITHOUT LOSING THE PLAYER

One of the strengths of the Landry design is that its versatility doesn't require turning the front panel into a control center.

The channels provide practical levels of gain that a working guitarist can actually use.

The Dirty Clean channel covers clean through British-inspired breakup.

Red moves into dedicated overdrive and distortion territory.

Yellow takes things further when additional saturation or a lead voice is required.

Individual Gain and Volume controls allow the channels to be balanced appropriately, while the EQ, Bright switching, Depth and additional voicing options give the player meaningful control without losing the fundamental character of the amplifier.

And on this specific LS100G3, Bill's additional Yellow Mode Bright switch provides one more useful adjustment.

TUBE-BUFFERED EFFECTS LOOP & DIGITAL REVERB

The LS100G3 also incorporates features that make it practical as the centerpiece of a complete guitar rig.

A tube-buffered effects loop provides an appropriate place for delay, modulation, reverb and other time-based effects, especially when the amplifier itself is generating substantial preamp gain.

Onboard digital reverb adds ambience without requiring another pedal.

For the player who wants to run a sophisticated pedalboard, the infrastructure is here.

For the player who wants to plug straight into the amp, that's perfectly viable too.

HAND-BUILT WITH SOMETHING EXTRA

Boutique amplification is supposed to be about more than producing fewer amplifiers.

It's about the relationship between the builder and the finished product.

This particular LS100G3 demonstrates that beautifully.

During its original construction, Bill Landry personally incorporated details that distinguish it from the standard configuration:

Blue instead of Red. Purple instead of Yellow. Matching custom LEDs on the footswitch. And an additional Bright switch for the Yellow Mode.

None of that turns the LS100G3 into something it wasn't intended to be.

Instead, it gives an already distinctive hand-built amplifier an individual identity.

For the player or boutique-amp enthusiast who appreciates knowing the history behind a particular piece of gear, that's worth something.
