A Faithful Return to the Original StingRay

The Retro '70s StingRay was created to honor the American craftsmanship and unmistakable personality of the original 1970s Music Man bass. Music Man offers the Retro edition in four historically inspired colors—Black, White, Vintage Sunburst and Heritage Natural—each finished in a high-gloss polyester topcoat. More importantly, Music Man went much deeper than the finish. The Retro '70s incorporates specifications designed to reproduce the look, feel and character of the early StingRay, giving today's player an opportunity to experience a remarkably traditional interpretation of this legendary bass.

3-Bolt Neck, Micro-Tilt & Bullet Truss Rod

One look at the neck construction tells you Music Man took the Retro concept seriously. The 21-fret maple neck uses the classic 3-bolt attachment with Micro-Tilt adjustment, accompanied by a period-inspired bullet-style truss rod adjustment. The maple fingerboard features traditional dot position markers, while the 34" scale and 1-11/16" nut width retain the familiar proportions expected from a StingRay. These aren't merely decorative vintage touches—they're fundamental parts of the construction that distinguish the Retro '70s from a modern StingRay Special.

Vintage Alnico StingRay Voice

At the heart of the Retro '70s is a vintage-style Music Man Alnico humbucker utilizing long Alnico 5 magnets and wound with original-style single poly-nylon wire. Paired with the classic StingRay Volume, Treble and Bass control layout, it delivers the powerful attack, definition and unmistakable character that helped establish the StingRay as one of the defining electric bass sounds of the 1970s. It's a simple control layout with an enormous amount of personality.

Pre-EB Geometry Bridge with Adjustable Mutes

Music Man carries the vintage treatment all the way through to the bridge. The Retro '70s uses a Pre-EB geometry Music Man chrome-plated steel bridge plate with vintage stainless-steel saddles and a strings-through-the-body design. Even the original-style adjustable mute pads return. Bring the mutes into contact with the strings and you can shorten sustain for a rounder, tighter old-school response; back them away and let the StingRay deliver its familiar open punch and authority.

Vintage Sunburst – Exactly Where It Belongs

Few finishes capture the visual personality of the era better than Vintage Sunburst. Over the ash body, the high-gloss polyester finish complements the classic StingRay silhouette, black pickguard and chrome hardware beautifully. Add the maple neck and fingerboard, Schaller bass tuners and unmistakable Music Man design, and the result looks every bit as appropriate today as it would have decades ago.

The Northeast Music Center Difference

At Northeast Music Center, historically inspired instruments become particularly interesting when the manufacturer goes beyond cosmetics and recreates the details that made the original special. That's exactly what Music Man has done here. The 3-bolt neck, Micro-Tilt adjustment, bullet truss rod, vintage Alnico 5 humbucker, string-through bridge and adjustable mute pads give the Retro '70s StingRay genuine substance behind its vintage appearance. Whether you're a longtime StingRay enthusiast, a collector who appreciates historically significant specifications or a player simply looking for an American-made bass with tremendous character, this is a StingRay worth experiencing. This exact Vintage Sunburst Retro '70s StingRay, Serial #346-71-22-01, is available now at Northeast Music Center. Contact Northeast Music Center for additional information about this instrument.
