Here's a new Martin that immediately got our attention at Northeast Music Center.

The C.F. Martin D-13E Retro Walnut, serial number 3092232, combines the power and projection of a traditional Martin Dreadnought with a particularly interesting tonewood choice: solid Black Walnut back and sides paired with a solid spruce top.

Sometimes nicknamed “Pennsylvania rosewood,” Black Walnut is a fitting choice for a guitar built just down the road from us at Martin in Nazareth. It gives this D-13E its own tonal and visual personality while retaining the fundamental ingredients players expect from a serious Martin acoustic.

Add scalloped X-bracing, ebony fingerboard and bridge, a 25.4" scale, PA neck profile, Martin E1 electronics and a full gloss body, and this becomes much more than simply another Road Series Dreadnought.

It's a great-looking, all-solid-wood Martin built to be played.

Solid Black Walnut – A Different Martin Voice

The Black Walnut is what makes this guitar particularly interesting.

Martin pairs solid Black Walnut back and sides with a solid spruce top, giving the D-13E Retro Walnut a strong acoustic foundation with a personality distinct from more familiar mahogany- or rosewood-backed Dreadnoughts.

Walnut is often appreciated for its balance—bringing warmth and body while retaining clarity and definition across the strings.

And visually, it can be beautiful.

The Natural Stain and gloss finish allow the grain and coloration of the Black Walnut to remain a major part of the guitar's appearance rather than hiding it beneath an opaque finish.

Around Pennsylvania, you'll sometimes hear Black Walnut referred to as “Pennsylvania rosewood.”

For us at Northeast Music Center, there's something especially appropriate about seeing this locally familiar hardwood used on a Martin Dreadnought built in Nazareth.

Dreadnought Power & Scalloped Bracing

Underneath the cosmetics is a traditional Martin formula.

The D-14 Fret Dreadnought body provides the size and air volume needed for strong projection, while scalloped X-bracing allows the solid spruce top to respond dynamically.

That makes the D-13E Retro Walnut particularly well suited to players who want an acoustic capable of handling a wide range of playing styles.

Dig into it with a pick and there's plenty of room for the guitar to respond.

Back off and the all-solid construction provides the clarity and sensitivity needed for lighter accompaniment.

For singers, rhythm players, flatpickers and working musicians, that's exactly what a good Dreadnought should do.

Retro Style – Modern Martin Playability

The “Retro” part of the name comes through in the details.

An Aging Toner gives the spruce top a warmer appearance, complemented by white binding, a faux tortoise pickguard, Style 28 Boltaron rosette and Style 28-inspired fingerboard dots.

Nickel open-gear tuners with Butterbean buttons complete the traditional look.

The playing experience, however, is decidedly modern.

Martin uses its PA Profile neck with High-Performance Taper, paired with a 1 3/4" nut width and 25.4" scale length.

It's a combination designed to remain comfortable across open-position chords, rhythm work, fingerstyle and movement farther up the ebony fingerboard.

Ready for the Stage

The D-13E Retro Walnut is equipped with Martin E1 electronics, giving the player a straightforward way to take the guitar from an acoustic setting to an amplifier, PA or recording system.

The system also incorporates a built-in tuner, an extremely useful feature for rehearsals and live performance.

We think Martin made a particularly smart choice with this guitar.

The D-13E Retro Walnut doesn't try to be a less-expensive version of another Martin. The Black Walnut gives it an identity of its own.

You still get the fundamentals that matter—solid spruce, solid back and sides, scalloped X-bracing, ebony fingerboard and bridge, a full-size Martin Dreadnought and comfortable modern neck.

But walnut changes the personality enough to make this guitar worth considering even if you already own other Martin acoustics.
