Some Private Stock guitars begin with a specification sheet. This one began with the woods.

The woods used to create Private Stock #12512 were personally hand-selected by Northeast Music Center owner Jack Gretz, drawing on three decades of experience with PRS guitars and years of working with exceptional Wood Library and Private Stock instruments.

That distinction matters.

The Koa top, South American Mahogany body, Figured Mahogany neck, and Ebony fretboard weren't simply chosen as names on a build sheet. The woods were selected with the finished instrument in mind, creating a Custom 24 that celebrates the natural beauty of its materials rather than hiding them beneath an elaborate finish.

The result is a remarkably elegant Private Stock—and at only 6 lbs. 6 oz., an exceptionally lightweight one as well.

Description

There are PRS guitars, there are Private Stock guitars—and then there are Private Stock builds where the combination of woods, appointments, construction, weight, and specifications makes the instrument immediately stand apart.

Private Stock #12512 is one of those guitars.

Built around the legendary PRS Custom 24 platform, this extraordinary instrument replaces the model's traditional figured maple top with a beautiful hand-selected Koa top finished in Natural. Rather than covering the wood with a dramatic color, the Natural finish allows the grain, color variation, and individual character of the Koa to become the visual centerpiece of the guitar.

Beneath that Koa top is a South American Mahogany body/middle, finished with an Antique Natural toner and chambered for weight relief. The combination produces an extraordinarily comfortable Private Stock Custom 24 weighing just 6 lbs. 6 oz.

The neck continues the theme with Figured Mahogany, also selected for this Private Stock build, paired with a dark Ebony fretboard and PRS's comfortable Pattern Regular neck carve.

Against the warm natural colors of the Koa and mahogany, the Ebony fretboard provides a beautiful visual contrast while contributing to the sophisticated, understated character of the entire instrument.

Private Stock Details Everywhere You Look

This is where the guitar becomes even more special.

The Ebony fretboard carries Original Birds with outlines and an Old School Eagle, executed with brilliant Paua centers surrounded by White Mother of Pearl outlines.

A Koa headstock veneer continues the visual character of the body all the way through the instrument, while a matching Koa truss rod cover adds another subtle Private Stock detail.

Even the tuner buttons were considered as part of the overall aesthetic. PRS used Ebony tuner buttons, visually connecting the headstock back to the Ebony fretboard.

The hardware combines Hybrid appointments, Tweaked Phase III Locking Tuners, and a PRS Adjustable Stoptail—a particularly interesting choice on a Custom 24 and one that helps distinguish PS #12512 from the familiar tremolo-equipped version of the model.

McCarty III Pickups

PRS equipped this Custom 24 with a pair of McCarty III pickups, creating an electronics package centered around clarity, dynamics, articulation, and musical response.

A straightforward Volume Control, Push/Pull Tone Control, and 3-Way Toggle keeps operation intuitive while adding useful tonal versatility through the push/pull function.

Rather than loading this guitar with unnecessary controls, the electronics allow the interaction between the pickups, carefully selected tonewoods, and player to remain at the center of the experience.

Black pickup rings and Black Lampshade knobs provide just enough contrast against the Natural Koa without distracting from the wood.

One of the things we particularly appreciate about this guitar at Northeast Music Center is how distinctly its personality moves away from the familiar Custom 24 recipe while retaining the foundation that made the model a PRS icon.

The chambered construction is especially noteworthy. PRS specifically chambered the body for weight relief, helping produce the guitar's remarkable 6 lb. 6 oz. weight. For a player who appreciates the feel of an exceptionally lightweight instrument without giving up the substantial carved-top construction and craftsmanship of a PRS Private Stock, this is a very compelling combination.

Visually, restraint is part of what makes the guitar so beautiful.

There is no elaborate stain competing with the Koa. The Natural top, Antique Natural-toned mahogany, Natural binding, Ebony fretboard, Koa appointments, Paua, and Mother of Pearl all work together.

Personally Selected for Northeast Music Center

For Northeast Music Center, the story behind a Private Stock instrument is every bit as important as its specification sheet.

Jack Gretz personally hand-selected the woods for this Private Stock build, bringing the experience developed through 30 years of selling PRS guitars and 15 years of Northeast Music Center representing PRS to the selection process.

That experience includes countless Core instruments along with extensive involvement in PRS Wood Library, limited-production builds, unusual specifications, and Private Stock guitars.

It gives Northeast Music Center the opportunity to approach instruments like PS #12512 differently.
