PRS meets Defender. Two passions. One unmistakable Silver Sky.
The PRS SE Silver Sky Defender Limited Edition in Carpathian Grey brings together two worlds that John Mayer is genuinely passionate about: exceptional guitars and the unmistakable style of the Land Rover Defender.
Created through the collaboration between PRS Guitars, John Mayer, and Defender, this limited-edition collection takes inspiration directly from the contemporary Defender color palette. For Mayer, a longtime Defender collector and enthusiast, it represents a natural crossover between the instruments he helped create with PRS and the vehicles that have captured his imagination.
For the SE Silver Sky Defender Collection, Mayer and PRS looked through decades of Defender history and a palette encompassing more than 900 colors before selecting four contemporary finishes: Petra Copper, Sedona Red, Carpathian Grey, and Woolstone Green.
This particular guitar is finished in Carpathian Grey, one of the distinctive colors associated with the Land Rover Defender and a color that gives the familiar Silver Sky design an entirely new personality.
The story here isn't simply about creating another new guitar color.
It's about taking inspiration from outside the guitar world.
John Mayer has long looked to objects, materials, and designs that interest him when developing colors for his guitars. As both a collector and an enthusiast of Defenders, the opportunity to bring genuine Defender colors to the Silver Sky created a crossover between two of his passions.
In Mayer's own words:
“Teaming up with Defender to offer the Silver Sky guitar in their legendary Defender colors is a dream come true. I’ve always chosen colorways based on objects and materials that inspire me in the world, and as a collector and lover of Defenders, this collaboration is the perfect crossover between two great passions of mine.” – John Mayer
On the SE Silver Sky, Carpathian Grey works exceptionally well.
PRS pairs the finish with a black pickguard and black plastics, creating a sophisticated and purposeful appearance that immediately separates this guitar from the standard SE Silver Sky lineup.
It's also a Silver Sky first: the Defender Color Collection marks the first use of a black pickguard on the Silver Sky model.
A custom neck plate unique to the Defender run provides another identifying feature, while an exclusive Custom PRS/Land Rover Gig Bag completes the collaboration.
While the Defender treatment gives this guitar its unmistakable appearance, PRS wisely left the heart of the SE Silver Sky intact.
Underneath the Carpathian Grey finish is the proven combination of feel, response, and playability that has made the SE Silver Sky one of the most recognizable guitars in the PRS lineup.
The solid poplar body is paired with a bolt-on maple neck featuring the 635JM neck shape, while a rosewood fretboard with PRS Small Bird inlays provides the familiar playing surface.
Its 25.5" scale length and 8.5" fretboard radius provide a comfortable combination of traditional feel and modern playability.
Twenty-two PRS SE medium frets complete a neck designed to be played—not simply admired as part of a limited-edition collection.
Three PRS 635JM “S” single-coil pickups provide the voice of the SE Silver Sky Defender.
Designed to PRS specifications, these pickups deliver a full, warm, vintage-inspired single-coil sound with a musical high end that avoids becoming overly sharp or brash.
The familiar 5-way blade pickup selector provides access to five classic pickup combinations, from warm and expressive neck tones to the distinctive intermediate-position sounds and articulate response of the bridge pickup.
Controls remain simple and intuitive with one volume and two tone controls.
The PRS 2-Point Steel Tremolo provides smooth tremolo functionality with excellent tuning stability while retaining the immediate feel players expect from the Silver Sky platform.
PRS vintage-style closed-back tuners, a synthetic bone nut, nickel hardware, and PRS Classic 10-46 strings complete a hardware package built around reliability, resonance, and real-world playability.
Rather than limiting the SE version to a predetermined number of guitars, PRS is offering the SE Silver Sky Defender Limited Edition during a specific ordering window.
The announced order window runs from September 15, 2026 through June 30, 2027.
That makes this a true limited-time variation of the SE Silver Sky rather than simply another permanent addition to the standard color lineup.

Additional Information
The PRS SE Silver Sky Defender Limited Edition Carpathian Grey isn't simply a Silver Sky wearing a new finish.
It represents the meeting of two genuine interests in John Mayer's life.
On one side is the Silver Sky—an instrument developed through Mayer's long relationship with PRS and his pursuit of a particular sound, feel, and response.
On the other is his enthusiasm for the Land Rover Defender, its unmistakable design, history, and distinctive palette of colors.
Carpathian Grey brings those two worlds together.
The result remains every bit the player's instrument an SE Silver Sky should be, but with an appearance, story, and collection of exclusive details that separate it from the standard production lineup.
For the Silver Sky player, John Mayer fan, PRS collector, or Land Rover Defender enthusiast, this is a particularly interesting chapter in the continuing Silver Sky story.
