MESA/Boogie Bass-800D Bass Amplifier Head

Classic MESA tube-driven bass character meets 800 watts of modern Class D power—and the entire amplifier weighs just 6.7 pounds.

The MESA/Boogie Bass-800D takes inspiration from one of the most respected bass amplifiers in MESA history, the legendary Bass 400+, and reimagines that musical, authoritative character for today's working bassist.

At its heart is a 12AT7 tube-driven preamp feeding an exceptionally powerful Class D output section capable of delivering 800 watts at 4 or 2 ohms and 400 watts at 8 ohms. Add variable high-pass filtering, selectable gain, Deep and Bright voicing options, a professional XLR DI, comprehensive cabinet impedance matching, headphone capability, and modern connectivity, and the Bass-800D becomes a remarkably complete professional bass head.

Available from Northeast Music Center, the Bass-800D is designed for bassists who want real power and serious tone without going back to the size and weight traditionally associated with an 800-watt professional rig.

BASS 400+ DNA FOR A NEW GENERATION

The Bass 400+ occupies a special place in MESA/Boogie history.

Its enormous all-tube power section, musical preamp and authoritative response made it a favorite among serious bassists throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

But there was a price for all that iron, glass and power:

Weight

The Bass-800D approaches the problem differently.

MESA retained the idea of a musical tube preamp, developing a 12AT7-based circuit influenced by the Bass 400+ while incorporating experience gained from the company's modern Subway bass amplifiers.

That tube front end is then paired with a modern Class D power section.

The result is an amplifier designed to retain the warmth, dynamics and musical overdrive characteristics players associate with a great tube bass preamp, while providing the speed, clarity, power and portability expected from a modern professional bass head.

800 WATTS — AND ONLY 6.7 POUNDS

This may be the specification that makes players look twice.

The Bass-800D delivers a full 800 watts into either a 4-ohm or 2-ohm load, or 400 watts at 8 ohms.

Yet the entire amplifier weighs just 6.7 pounds.

That's an extraordinary power-to-weight ratio for a professional bass head.

More importantly, MESA provides selectable 2, 4 and 8-ohm impedance matching, making the Bass-800D remarkably flexible when you're assembling different cabinet combinations.

For the working bassist, that means one amplifier can comfortably move between a compact rehearsal setup and a much larger stage rig.

LOW GAIN OR HIGH GAIN — CLEAN TO MUSICAL OVERDRIVE

The Bass-800D isn't designed solely around pristine Class D bass tone.

A front-panel Low/High Gain switch changes the operating range of the preamp, allowing players to explore more of the tube front end's character.

Run it clean for clarity, punch and definition.

Push the preamp harder and the Bass-800D moves toward warm, musically useful tube-enhanced overdrive, making this an especially interesting amplifier for rock, alternative, punk and heavier styles where the bass needs texture and attitude rather than simply more volume.

And because the Gain and Master controls are independent, you have meaningful control over how much preamp character becomes part of your final sound.

VARIABLE HIGH-PASS FILTER — ONE OF THE MOST USEFUL CONTROLS ON THE AMP

The continuously variable High-Pass Filter deserves more attention than it usually receives.

Very low frequencies can consume enormous amplifier power and speaker excursion without necessarily contributing useful musical information. They can also make a bass sound unfocused in a difficult room.

The Bass-800D allows you to remove unwanted sub-low information before it becomes a problem.

That can mean a tighter mix, cleaner low end, improved cabinet behavior and more usable amplifier headroom.

For a bassist playing different rooms every night, it's an exceptionally practical tool.

FAST TONE SHAPING WITHOUT A COMPLICATED CONTROL PANEL

Rather than recreating the Bass 400+'s large Graphic EQ section, MESA designed the Bass-800D around controls that allow a player to reach useful sounds quickly.

Traditional Bass, Mid and Treble controls provide the foundation.

Engage Deep when you want additional low-frequency weight and roundness.

Use Bright when your sound needs more attack, definition and upper-frequency presence.

Combined with the High-Pass Filter and selectable Gain structure, there's enough flexibility to move from warm vintage-inspired bass sounds to clear, articulate modern tones and aggressive overdriven voices without turning the front panel into a science project.

A PROFESSIONAL DI BUILT INTO YOUR AMP

For live and recording work, the Bass-800D includes a comprehensive balanced XLR Direct Output.

Pre/Post selection determines whether the DI signal is taken before or after the amplifier's tone shaping. Mic/Line level selection helps accommodate different mixing and recording equipment, while Ground Lift can help resolve grounding problems.

This allows the Bass-800D to become the center of a professional stage rig: your cabinet gets the power and feel you want while front-of-house receives a controlled direct signal.

At Northeast Music Center, we consider that kind of functionality especially important for working musicians. A professional bass amplifier needs to sound great on its own, but it also needs to integrate easily into the rest of a modern live or recording system.

BUILT FOR THE WORKING BASSIST

MESA didn't stop at tone and power.

You also get a fully buffered Series Effects Loop, Headphone Output, Aux Input, dedicated Tuner Output, footswitchable Mute capability and USB Device Power.

The Effects Send can double as a preamp output, while the Effects Return can be used as a power amp input, opening additional possibilities for more sophisticated rigs.

Two locking speakON-style outputs provide secure cabinet connections, and the universal auto-configuring power supply makes the Bass-800D especially attractive for musicians who travel.

Then there's the practical finishing touch:

A gig bag with shoulder strap is included.

Instead of wrestling a massive bass head into the venue, the heart of your amplification system can travel over your shoulder.

CLASSIC BOOGIE ATTITUDE WITHOUT CLASSIC BOOGIE WEIGHT

That's ultimately what makes the Bass-800D so compelling.

It isn't simply another lightweight Class D bass head.

MESA designed it to connect its modern Subway-era amplification technology with the company's long history of tube-driven professional bass amplification.

At Northeast Music Center, we believe that's exactly what makes the Bass-800D worth considering against the increasingly crowded field of lightweight bass amplifiers.

You get genuine tube-preamp character, serious tone-shaping capability, professional connectivity and enough power to handle demanding live situations—all in an amplifier small enough to carry with one hand.

For the bassist moving between rehearsals, sessions, clubs and large stages, Northeast Music Center sees the Bass-800D as an especially compelling combination of classic MESA character and modern practicality.

One 12AT7. 800 watts. 2, 4 or 8-ohm operation. Professional DI connectivity.

And only 6.7 pounds.

Big Boogie bass tone no longer requires a big Boogie bass head.
