MESA/Boogie Subway TT-800 Bass Amplifier Head

Two distinct tube-preamp personalities, massive 800-watt output, and a remarkably portable 7 lb. 3 oz. package. The MESA/Boogie Subway TT-800 combines the warm, dimensional character inspired by the legendary Bass 400+ with the fast, articulate response of the modern Subway platform—giving serious bassists two genuinely different voices in one professional amplifier.

The MESA/Boogie Subway TT-800 sits at the top of the Subway bass-amplifier family for a very good reason.

Rather than forcing one preamp architecture to cover every style of bass playing, MESA gives the TT-800 two separate Class A tube preamp channels feeding an exceptionally powerful Class D output section.

The Boogie Channel draws inspiration from the celebrated Bass 400+ and emphasizes warmth, bloom, harmonic richness and classic MESA bass character.

The Subway Channel takes a more modern approach—tight low end, immediate response, detailed mids and clear highs.

Both feed an 800-watt power section capable of operating at either 4 or 2 ohms, with 400 watts available at 8 ohms.

And MESA manages to put all of this into an amplifier weighing only 7 lbs. 3 oz.

Available from Northeast Music Center, the TT-800 is an exceptional choice for the bassist who wants genuine tube-preamp character, modern power and serious tonal flexibility without transporting a heavyweight bass head.

TWO CHANNELS — TWO DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO BASS TONE

The TT in TT-800 could almost stand for two personalities.

This isn't an amplifier where Channel 2 simply adds more gain to Channel 1.

The channels are intentionally different.

MESA designed the TT-800 so a bassist can move between two different eras and philosophies of bass amplification while still using the same 800-watt power section.

That's what makes this amplifier special.

BOOGIE CHANNEL — THE BASS 400+ LEGACY

The upper Boogie Channel reaches back into an important part of MESA history.

MESA's Bass 400+ became a respected professional bass amplifier during its long production life, finding its way into the rigs of major touring and recording bassists.

For the TT-800, MESA revisited that classic tone-stack architecture and brought its character into the modern Subway platform.

The result emphasizes the qualities players associate with a great tube bass preamp:

Warmth.

Bloom.

Harmonic richness.

Dimension.

But MESA didn't simply recreate an old circuit.

They expanded its flexibility with a variable High-Pass Filter and a semi-parametric Mid section, making the classic-inspired voice considerably easier to adapt to modern instruments, cabinets and stages.

SUBWAY CHANNEL — FAST, CLEAN AND MODERN

Switch to the Subway Channel and the personality changes.

This side of the amplifier is about accuracy, punch, clarity and immediate response.

The low end tracks tightly.

The mids remain articulate.

The highs stay clear.

And the EQ architecture is designed for substantial tonal control.

The Subway Channel provides a fully active 3-band EQ with approximately ±12 dB of Bass, Mid and Treble adjustment, plus a sweepable Mid Frequency control spanning 150Hz to 2kHz.

For modern active basses, extended-range instruments, slap, technically demanding playing or situations where precision matters, this channel gives the TT-800 an entirely different personality.

USE ONE BASS — OR TWO

Here's where the dual-channel architecture becomes especially useful.

You can use the two channels as different sounds for the same instrument.

For example:

Boogie Channel — warm fingerstyle tone

Subway Channel — articulate slap or pick tone

Then switch between them.

But MESA also designed the architecture so the channels can accommodate different instruments with different tonal requirements.

That can be extremely useful for a working bassist moving between instruments during a performance.

Vintage passive four-string.

Modern active five-string.

Fretted and fretless.

Different output levels.

Different EQ requirements.

The TT-800 gives you considerably more flexibility than a conventional single-channel bass head.

THREE REAL 12AT7 PREAMP TUBES

This is an important distinction.

The TT-800 doesn't simply use a tube as decoration in an otherwise solid-state preamp.

MESA specifies three 12AT7 tubes across its Class A preamp architecture.

Those tubes contribute directly to the response and harmonic character of the amplifier.

And because the Boogie and Subway channels are voiced differently, you're getting tube character applied to two very different approaches to bass tone.

That combination is one of the defining features of the TT-800.

800 WATTS — AT 4 OR 2 OHMS

This is another major selling point.

The TT-800 delivers:

400 watts RMS @ 8 ohms

800 watts RMS @ 4 ohms

800 watts RMS @ 2 ohms.

The ability to deliver its full rated output at 2 ohms gives serious bassists tremendous flexibility when configuring cabinets.

A rear-panel impedance switch allows the power amplifier to be properly configured for 8/4-ohm or 2-ohm operation.

For players building larger Subway cabinet systems, that's a significant advantage.

VARIABLE HIGH-PASS FILTER — ON BOTH CHANNELS

Both channels include an adjustable 25Hz–125Hz High-Pass Filter.

This may not sound glamorous, but for a professional bassist it can be one of the most useful controls on the amplifier.

Very low frequencies consume enormous amplifier and speaker power while sometimes contributing little useful musical information.

The High-Pass Filter lets you control that extreme low-frequency content.

In a boomy room, raise it.

Using a smaller cabinet that doesn't need to reproduce unnecessary sub-bass information? Raise it.

Want maximum extension from a capable cabinet system? Set it lower.

The TT-800's filter uses a steep 24 dB/octave architecture, giving the control real authority over unwanted low-frequency energy.

DEEP AND BRIGHT

MESA also provides global Deep and Bright switches.

Deep adds low-frequency weight when the situation calls for it.

Bright adds additional presence and definition.

MESA specifically notes that Deep can be useful for styles requiring greater low-frequency emphasis, while Bright can add sparkle for slap techniques or greater definition in chordal playing.

They're simple controls.

But in a live situation, simple can be exactly what you want.

VARIABLE OVERDRIVE SYMMETRY

Here's one of the more unusual controls.

The TT-800 includes an Overdrive Symmetry control that changes the harmonic behavior of the power amplifier as it approaches limiting.

Move toward symmetrical behavior for a tighter harmonic structure.

Move toward asymmetrical behavior for a looser, more tube-like harmonic spread.

That's a sophisticated feature for players who pay attention not simply to EQ, but to the feel and harmonic behavior of their amplifier.

TWO EFFECTS LOOPS

Because the TT-800 has two independent channels, MESA gives you:

Two fully buffered, channel-independent Series Effects Loops.

That opens up some interesting possibilities.

Different processing for each channel.

Different effects for different instruments.

Or even incorporating an external preamp or modeler into one side of the system.

For a sophisticated professional rig, this is considerably more powerful than a single global effects loop.

TWO TUBE-DRIVEN DI OUTPUTS

The TT-800 is exceptionally well equipped for stage and recording use.

There are two balanced XLR DI outputs.

One is a tube-driven Pre-EQ DI.

The other is a tube-driven Post-Master DI.

Both provide Line/Mic level switching and Ground Lift.

That's serious connectivity.

Whether you're feeding front-of-house, a recording interface or another professional audio system, the TT-800 gives you useful choices about exactly where the direct signal is taken from the amplifier.

HEADPHONES, AUX INPUT AND USB POWER

MESA also includes several features that make the TT-800 useful away from the stage.

There's a headphone output.

An Auxiliary Input.

And a USB power outlet.

The USB connection isn't there for audio processing; it's a convenient power source for compatible accessories.

Small detail.

Very useful in a modern bass rig

7 POUNDS, 3 OUNCES

That's the official weight of the TT-800 metal head.

Dimensions are only:

4" High

12" Wide

11.375" Deep

Think about what you're carrying:

800 watts.

Three 12AT7 tubes.

Two complete preamp channels.

Two independent effects loops.

Two tube-driven DIs.

2-ohm capability.

Headphone output.

Aux input.

And the whole amplifier weighs barely more than seven pounds.

That's a dramatic departure from the heavyweight professional bass amplifiers of previous generations.

THE GIG BAG IS INCLUDED

MESA includes a gig bag with shoulder strap with the TT-800.

For an amplifier this light, that makes perfect sense.

Instead of wrestling a bass head out of the back of a vehicle, you can literally carry your amplifier over your shoulder while moving the rest of your rig.

For working bassists, that's not a novelty.

It's a genuine quality-of-life improvement.

BOOGIE HISTORY MEETS THE MODERN SUBWAY PLATFORM

This is ultimately what makes the TT-800 so compelling.

It's not simply an 800-watt lightweight bass amplifier.

There are plenty of lightweight Class D amplifiers.

The TT-800 combines that modern portability and output with genuine Class A tube preamps and two intentionally different approaches to bass tone.

The Boogie Channel looks backward to the warmth and bloom of MESA's classic bass heritage.

The Subway Channel looks forward with tighter tracking, modern EQ flexibility and immediate response.

And both are available whenever you need them.

At Northeast Music Center, that's the story we want the serious bassist to understand.

You're not choosing between vintage warmth and modern precision.

The TT-800 gives you both.

Three 12AT7s. Two channels. Two personalities. 800 watts. 2-ohm capability. 7 lbs. 3 oz.

One remarkably complete professional bass amplifier.
