The EL84 is one of the defining power tubes behind classic British-inspired guitar tone.
Compared with larger power tubes, EL84s are known for their lively response, distinctive midrange character, upper-end chime, and the way they transition into musical power-tube overdrive.
MESA's EL84 / 6BQ5 delivers tight bass, warm mids, and a clear, sparkling top end that helps the guitar remain present in a mix.
Power tubes operate together within your amplifier's output section, making proper matching particularly important.
MESA supplies these tubes as a matched duet, providing two EL84 / 6BQ5 power tubes selected for consistent operation together.
For MESA amplifiers using the company's maintenance-free fixed-bias design, genuine properly selected MESA tubes also make replacement considerably more straightforward.
The MESA EL84 / 6BQ5 is the factory power-tube type used in several notable MESA designs, including:
Mark Five: 25
Mark Five: 35
Express 5:25 and 5:25+
TransAtlantic TA-15 and TA-30
F-30
Nomad 45
Maverick
Blue Angel
20/20 Power Amp
It is also used in other compatible amplifiers designed for EL84 / 6BQ5 power tubes.
Always verify your amplifier's required tube type and quantity before replacing power tubes.
Some amplifiers use two EL84s while others use four or more.
If your amplifier requires four power tubes, replacing only one matched pair may not be appropriate. Consult the amplifier's owner's manual or have the complete output section evaluated before installation.
At Northeast Music Center, we understand that choosing replacement tubes involves more than simply matching the number printed on the tube.
The correct tube type, quantity, matching, and amplifier application all matter.
Whether you're retubing a Mark Five: 25, Mark Five: 35, another MESA amplifier, or a compatible EL84-powered amp, Northeast Music Center can help you determine the correct replacement configuration.
For players looking for genuine MESA EL84 tone, factory-selected consistency, and the convenience of a properly matched pair, the MESA/Boogie EL84 / 6BQ5 Matched Pair is available from Northeast Music Center.
These tubes are recommended for my amplifier, and they work really well. My amp sounds like new!
