MESA/Boogie Subway D-800 Bass Amplifier Head w/ Subway Ultra-Lite 1x12 + 1x15 Cabinets
A wonderfully versatile MESA bass rig built around power, portability, and two distinctly useful speaker voices. The Subway D-800 paired with a Subway Ultra-Lite 1x12 and 1x15 gives you the articulation and immediacy of a 12, the depth and authority of a 15, and the ability to run both cabinets together for the D-800's full 800-watt output.
The MESA/Boogie Subway D-800 was MESA's first ultra-lightweight professional Class D bass amplifier. Weighing only 5.5 pounds, it delivers 800 watts at 4 or 2 ohms and 400 watts at 8 ohms, with a solid-state preamp, fully active 4-band EQ, Variable Voicing control, Deep switch, and professional balanced XLR direct output.
The two included Subway cabinets are both 8-ohm designs. The 1x12 is rated at 400 watts RMS, and the 1x15 is also rated at 400 watts RMS. Used together in parallel, the two cabinets create a nominal 4-ohm load, allowing the D-800 to deliver its full 800-watt rated output.
Available from Northeast Music Center, this is a particularly smart system for the working bassist because you don't have to bring the entire stack to every gig.

THREE DIFFERENT RIGS IN ONE SYSTEM
This is the real beauty of the D-800 with a 1x12 and 1x15.
You essentially have three bass rigs available.
D-800 + 1x12
Compact, responsive, articulate and extremely easy to transport.
The 8-ohm cabinet receives 400 watts from the D-800.
D-800 + 1x15
A larger speaker platform with greater low-frequency extension and the familiar authority players associate with a great 15-inch bass cabinet.
Again, the 8-ohm cabinet receives 400 watts.
D-800 + 1x12 + 1x15
Now the two 8-ohm cabinets create a nominal 4-ohm load.
The D-800 delivers its full:
800 Watts.
For the working bassist, that's tremendous flexibility from one system.
THE SUBWAY ULTRA-LITE 1x12
The Subway 1x12 is MESA's most compact Subway cabinet.
It combines a highly responsive Neodymium 12-inch driver with a high-frequency horn, premium attenuator, lightweight Italian poplar construction, aircraft-style bracing, and MESA's tuned front-ported Tri-Porting design.
The specifications are impressive for such a manageable cabinet:
400 Watts RMS
8 Ohms
97.5dB Sensitivity
124dB Maximum SPL
and only:
32.9 lbs.
MESA specifically designed the 1x12 to work effectively by itself or in combination with another 1x12, a 1x15, or larger-format Subway cabinets.
That makes it an ideal foundation for a modular rig like this one.
THE SUBWAY ULTRA-LITE 1x15
The 1x15 brings something different to the system.
Its larger Neodymium driver gives the rig the depth and authority bassists have associated with 15-inch speakers for generations, while MESA's modern enclosure design keeps the cabinet remarkably portable.
The 1x15 is rated:
400 Watts RMS
8 Ohms
98.5dB Sensitivity
125dB Maximum SPL
and weighs just:
37.9 lbs.
The cabinet's published F10 point reaches 38.1Hz, compared with 41.5Hz for the 1x12, giving the larger cabinet additional extension at the bottom of its response.
Together, the two cabinets give you a wonderfully complete speaker system.
800 WATTS WITH BOTH CABINETS
This combination isn't just tonally interesting.
It's also an excellent electrical match.
Each cabinet is:
8 Ohms / 400 Watts RMS
Two nominal 8-ohm cabinets connected in parallel present the amplifier with a nominal:
4-ohm load.
The D-800 is rated:
800 Watts @ 4 Ohms.
So with the complete stack connected properly, you're able to take advantage of the amplifier's full rated power.
That's exactly what we want from a properly configured bass package.
THE ORIGINAL SUBWAY D-800
The D-800 was a milestone amplifier for MESA/Boogie.
It was the company's first ultra-lightweight professional-level Class D bass amplifier, delivering enormous power from a chassis weighing only 5.5 pounds.
And unlike amplifiers that become complicated simply because they can, the D-800 keeps its controls remarkably straightforward.
You get:
Input Gain
Bass
Low Mid
High Mid
Treble
Variable Voicing
Deep
and:
Master Volume.
The four-band active EQ provides up to ±12dB of adjustment.
That's plenty of control for shaping the amplifier around different instruments, rooms, cabinets, and playing styles without spending half the gig adjusting your amplifier.
VARIABLE VOICING
The D-800's Variable Voicing control is one of its defining features.
It allows the player to move progressively from a comparatively flat response toward a more sculpted vintage-style scoop.
That gives you a quick way to alter the overall personality of the rig.
Want the natural voice of your bass and cabinets?
Stay closer to Flat.
Want something broader and more sculpted?
Bring in more Voicing.
With two different speaker sizes contributing to the complete rig, that simple control becomes particularly useful.
DEEP SWITCH
The D-800 also includes MESA's Deep switch, designed to enhance low-frequency response.
With the 1x12 alone, it can add additional weight to a compact rig.
With the 1x15, it complements the larger cabinet's low-frequency personality.
And with both cabinets running together, you've got an extremely substantial full-range stage system available from a remarkably small amplifier.
PROFESSIONAL DIRECT OUTPUT
The D-800 was designed for professional live and recording applications.
Its balanced XLR Direct Output provides:
Pre/Post selection
Mic/Line level selection
and:
Ground Lift.
That allows the cabinet system to provide your stage sound while simultaneously feeding a controlled signal directly to the front-of-house console.
You get the physical response of a real 1x12/1x15 stack behind you while the engineer receives a dedicated DI signal.
That's a very practical professional setup.
LIGHTWEIGHT REALLY MEANS LIGHTWEIGHT
Here's where the complete Subway philosophy becomes obvious.
D-800: 5.5 lbs.
Subway 1x12: 32.9 lbs.
Subway 1x15: 37.9 lbs.
Total weight for the complete amplifier and both cabinets:
Approximately 76.3 pounds.
That's not the weight of one giant cabinet.
That's the entire 800-watt amplifier and two-cabinet rig.
Even better, you're moving it as three manageable pieces rather than one enormous enclosure.
For a working musician, that's a significant advantage.
MADE IN PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA
The D-800, Subway 1x12, and Subway 1x15 are all made in Petaluma, California. The cabinets use lightweight Italian poplar construction and MESA Subway Neodymium speakers, while the D-800 uses a lightweight aluminum chassis.
The goal of the Subway series wasn't simply to make bass equipment lighter.
It was to make serious professional bass equipment lighter.
That's an important difference.
