MESA/Boogie Subway D-800 Bass Amplifier Head w/ Subway Ultra-Lite 1x15 Cabinet

Classic 15-inch bass authority meets modern MESA portability. The MESA/Boogie Subway D-800 paired with the Subway Ultra-Lite 1x15 creates a compact professional bass rig with warmth, depth, punch, and excellent articulation—without the weight traditionally associated with a serious 1x15 system.

The MESA/Boogie Subway D-800 delivers 800 watts at 4 or 2 ohms and 400 watts at 8 ohms from an amplifier weighing only 5.5 pounds. Its solid-state preamp combines a fully active 4-band EQ, Variable Voicing control, Deep switch, professional balanced XLR DI, headphone output, and auxiliary input in a straightforward package designed for working bassists.

Pair it with the Subway Ultra-Lite 1x15, and you have an 8-ohm, 400-watt RMS cabinet loaded with a MESA Subway Neodymium 15-inch speaker. That means the D-800 delivers 400 watts into this single-cabinet configuration—an excellent match for a cabinet MESA designed to deliver a warm, huge sound while remaining exceptionally easy to transport.

Available from Northeast Music Center, this is a great rig for bassists who appreciate the foundation of a 15-inch speaker but don't want to haul yesterday's heavyweight bass equipment.

THE CLASSIC 1x15 — REIMAGINED

There's a reason the 1x15 has remained one of the most recognizable bass cabinet formats for generations.

A great 15 can provide the sense of size, warmth, and low-frequency foundation that bassists love—but traditional 15-inch cabinets could also be big and heavy.

MESA approached the Subway 1x15 differently.

The cabinet uses a lightweight Neodymium 15-inch driver, Italian poplar construction, tuned front porting, and carefully engineered bracing to create a 1x15 weighing only:

37.9 lbs.

That's remarkably manageable for a professional 15-inch bass enclosure.

WARM, HUGE — BUT NOT MUDDY

MESA describes the Subway 1x15 as a warm, huge-sounding compact cabinet capable of covering everything from old-school Blues and R&B to modern slap and tightly picked Rock styles.

That's important.

This isn't a one-dimensional 15 designed only for deep vintage bass sounds.

The Neodymium driver is complemented by a dedicated high-frequency horn with adjustable attenuation, allowing the cabinet to retain the articulation required for modern bass tones.

You get the foundation of a 15 without automatically sacrificing detail.

400 WATTS INTO THE INCLUDED CABINET

For this particular package, the correct power figure is:

400 Watts.

The Subway 1x15 is an:

8-ohm cabinet.

The D-800 produces:

400 watts at 8 ohms.

That makes this an exceptionally straightforward single-cabinet rig.

The cabinet itself is rated for 400 watts RMS thermal and mechanical power handling, matching the amplifier's rated output into its 8-ohm load.

IMPRESSIVE LOW-END EXTENSION

The Subway 1x15's published low-frequency specifications include:

F3 – 56.6Hz

F6 – 47.2Hz

F10 – 38.1Hz

with high-frequency response extending beyond:

12kHz.

That 38.1Hz F10 figure demonstrates how far this relatively compact cabinet can reach into the lower register.

Whether you're playing a traditional four-string, five-string, active bass, or something more modern, there's real low-frequency capability available here.

125dB MAXIMUM SPL

The Subway 1x15 is rated at:

98.5dB average sensitivity

with a maximum output of:

125dB SPL @ 1 meter.

That's serious output from a cabinet weighing under 38 pounds.

Combine it with the D-800's 400-watt output at 8 ohms and you've got a very capable single-cabinet system for rehearsals, clubs, stages, houses of worship, recording sessions, and countless other professional applications.

VARIABLE VOICING

The D-800 gives the player a very useful Variable Voicing control that moves from a comparatively flat response toward a more vintage-style scooped character.

That makes it easy to change the overall personality of the rig without completely rebuilding your EQ.

Stay closer to Flat when you want the natural personality of your instrument and 1x15 to dominate.

Bring in more Voicing when you're looking for a broader, more sculpted presentation.

It's simple and musical.

FULLY ACTIVE 4-BAND EQ

You also get:

Bass

Low Mid

High Mid

Treble

with ±12dB of adjustment on each band.

That's plenty of control for tailoring the rig around different instruments and playing environments.

And because the 1x15 already provides such a substantial foundation, the D-800's EQ gives you the ability to refine that response rather than simply piling on more low end.

DEEP SWITCH

Of course, if you do want more low-frequency emphasis, the D-800 provides its dedicated:

DEEP switch.

MESA designed the Deep circuit specifically to enhance the amplifier's low-end response.

Combined with the Subway 1x15, you've got plenty of authority available when the music calls for it.

HIGH-FREQUENCY HORN WITH ATTENUATOR

One of the features that makes this 1x15 so versatile is its dedicated high-frequency horn with premium attenuator.

Want more definition from fresh roundwound strings?

Bring it up.

Playing slap?

You've got the additional high-frequency detail.

Want a warmer, more traditional old-school response?

Roll it back.

This allows the cabinet to move from vintage-inspired warmth toward a more modern full-range presentation without changing cabinets.

LESS THAN 44 POUNDS FOR THE COMPLETE RIG

Here's one of our favorite numbers:

D-800 Head — 5.5 lbs.

Subway 1x15 — 37.9 lbs.

Complete amplifier + cabinet — approximately 43.4 lbs.

That's impressive.

You're looking at a complete professional MESA bass rig weighing less than many traditional bass cabinets alone.

And because the amplifier and cabinet are separate pieces, neither component is difficult to handle.

That's the kind of practicality a working musician appreciates every single time the equipment leaves the house.

BUILT IN PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA

Both the D-800 and Subway Ultra-Lite 1x15 are built in Petaluma, California. The cabinet uses lightweight Italian poplar construction, while the D-800 uses a lightweight aluminum chassis.

The Subway philosophy isn't simply about making smaller equipment.

It's about making professional equipment easier to own, transport, and use.

That's a meaningful distinction.

START WITH THE 1x15 — EXPAND WHEN YOU NEED MORE

This is another reason we like this package at Northeast Music Center.

With the single 1x15:

400 Watts @ 8 Ohms.

But the D-800 itself is capable of:

800 Watts @ 4 Ohms

or:

800 Watts @ 2 Ohms.

MESA specifically designed the 1x15 to work by itself or as a companion to another compatible Subway cabinet, including a 1x12 or another 1x15, while observing the proper impedance requirements.

That means this isn't necessarily a rig you'll outgrow.

It's a compact configuration of a larger modular MESA system.

CLASSIC BASS AUTHORITY WITHOUT CLASSIC BASS-CAB WEIGHT

This package gets right to the heart of what made the Subway series so appealing.

400 watts.

One Neodymium 15-inch speaker.

Full active EQ.

Variable Voicing.

Deep control.

Professional DI.

Less than 44 pounds for the complete amp-and-cabinet system.

At Northeast Music Center, we'd recommend this rig to the bassist who loves the feel and foundation of a 15 but wants a system that actually makes sense for today's working musician.

It's warm without being dull.

Powerful without being enormous.

Simple without being limited.

And portable without feeling like a compromise.

One 5.5-pound head. One Neodymium 15. 400 watts. Approximately 43 pounds for the entire rig.

That's a very compelling MESA bass system.
