PRS Custom 24 Wood Library 10 Top Quilted Maple Charcoal (Natural Back) Stained Neck (s/n: 0433446)! Guitar Comes with PRS D1 Molded Hardshell Case!

This is one of those PRS builds where the contrast really makes the guitar.

Up front, you have a 10 Top Quilted Maple top finished in Charcoal, while the back is left natural, showing off the Mahogany rather than carrying the dark finish around the entire guitar. Add the stained Figured Maple neck, Ebony fretboard and Ebony headstock veneer, and there's a lot to look at without the guitar feeling overdone.

We particularly like the Natural Back on this one. It gives you a completely different view when the guitar is turned over and provides a warm contrast to the Charcoal top. It's also a nice way to actually see the Mahogany that is such an important part of the Custom 24 recipe.

This guitar is part of the same Wood Library run we put together for Northeast Music Center, and the idea was to build Custom 24s with some beautiful woods and details while keeping them very usable as guitars.

The Build

The neck is Figured Maple with a Pattern Thin profile, paired with an Ebony fretboard. PRS also used Ebony for the headstock veneer, which works especially well with the darker Charcoal top.

The J-Birds feature Green Select Abalone outlines with Paua centers. Against the Ebony board, there's plenty of color when the light catches them, but they're subtle enough that they don't compete with the quilted top.

For pickups, this Custom 24 has a covered set of McCarty III Treble and Bass pickups, controlled by Volume, Push/Pull Tone and a 3-Way Toggle. The bridge is the PRS Patented Tremolo, Gen III.

It's a relatively straightforward control setup, which we like on a guitar with this much going on visually. You get the additional options from the push/pull tone control without turning the top of the guitar into a control panel.

Black pickup rings, switch tip and tuner buttons finish things off and fit naturally with the Charcoal and Ebony appointments.

30 Years with PRS

There's one other detail on this guitar that's especially personal to us.

The truss rod cover commemorates 30 years of Jack Gretz selling PRS guitars and 15 years of Northeast Music Center representing PRS.

We've been fortunate to handle a lot of special PRS guitars over those years, and Wood Library runs are always fun because we get to make choices that we would want to see on the guitars ourselves. This run is a good example—great tops and some special appointments, but underneath everything they're still Custom 24s that we'd want to pick up and play.
