This complete MESA/Boogie rig combines the 100/50/20-watt EL34-powered Badlander 100 with MESA’s legendary sealed Horizontal Rectifier 2x12 loaded with two Celestion Vintage 30s—delivering tremendous punch, aggressive midrange, controlled low end, and serious stage presence without requiring a full 4x12.

MESA designed this cabinet around the dimensions of the bottom two speakers of its Standard Oversized Rectifier 4x12, creating a sealed enclosure with tremendous punch and projection for its relatively compact size. Inside are two Celestion Vintage 30 speakers, bringing the warmth, cut, and assertive midrange that have become synonymous with the Rectifier cabinet sound.

WHY THE HORIZONTAL RECTIFIER 2x12?

The Horizontal Rectifier 2x12 has become a legendary MESA cabinet for a reason.

MESA originally created it by matching the dimensions of the bottom two speakers of the Standard Oversized Rectifier 4x12. The resulting sealed enclosure produces remarkable low-frequency authority, punch, and projection for a 2x12.

That's precisely what you want underneath a Badlander 100.

The Badlander tightens and focuses the Rectifier concept.

The Horizontal Rectifier cabinet gives it size, depth, and physical authority.

It's a tremendous combination.

4x12 DNA IN A 2x12

The Horizontal Rectifier isn't intended to behave like a small, lightweight cabinet.

Its roots are firmly connected to MESA's oversized Rectifier 4x12.

That means substantial internal volume.

A sealed enclosure.

Two Vintage 30s.

Serious low-frequency extension.

Strong midrange projection.

And the ability to move considerably more air than its 2x12 designation might lead you to expect.

MESA itself says that when you want to bring a 4x12 but can't, the Horizontal Rectifier can sound big enough to make you question whether there's actually a 4x12 behind you.

That's a meaningful selling point.

THE BADLANDER — RECTIFIER POWER WITH MORE FOCUS

The Badlander doesn't abandon the Rectifier concept.

It refines it.

The low end is tighter.

The midrange is more assertive.

The response is immediate.

There's tremendous gain available, but the amplifier doesn't rely on saturation alone to create impact.

It tracks the player.

That makes the Badlander especially compelling for technically demanding rhythm playing, progressive music, hard rock, modern metal, lower tunings, and any guitarist who wants serious gain without sacrificing articulation.

Put that through a sealed pair of Vintage 30s and the entire rig becomes remarkably physical.

The Badlander's reputation naturally attracts high-gain players, but Crunch may be one of the amplifier's strongest voices.

It can move from muscular lower-gain rhythm tones through classic rock, alternative, punk, hard rock, and substantial overdrive.

This is also where the EL34 power section really shines.

Harmonic texture.

Midrange authority.

And through the Horizontal Rectifier 2x12, Crunch becomes considerably bigger than the word might suggest.

CRUSH — WHERE PRECISION MEETS POWER

Crush delivers the serious gain.

But the Badlander philosophy isn't simply about producing more distortion.

It's about maintaining definition inside the distortion.

The attack stays immediate.

Palm-muted notes remain controlled.

Individual notes retain separation.

Fast passages don't disappear beneath an oversized wall of saturation.

And the Horizontal Rectifier cabinet's controlled sealed response reinforces exactly those characteristics.

100 / 50 / 20 WATTS

The Badlander 100 gives you three power options from the same amplifier:

100 Watts — maximum authority, punch, headroom, and low-frequency control.

50 Watts — substantial tube power with a different power-section response.

20 Watts — a lower-powered Triode setting with a sweeter, more readily driven feel.

MESA specifies these three wattage choices globally on the Badlander 100.

That makes the amplifier much more adaptable than the "100 Watt" name initially suggests.

You can choose the power-section behavior that makes sense for the situation.

CABCLONE IR — A MODERN RECORDING RIG TOO

The Badlander 100 includes MESA's CabClone IR system with eight factory-loaded MESA cabinet IRs, channel-assignable IR selection, USB connectivity, balanced XLR output, headphone output, and an internal amplifier load for cabinet-free operation.

That means you can use this system traditionally:

Badlander → Horizontal Rectifier 2x12

Or you can run the physical cabinet while simultaneously sending an IR-based direct signal to front-of-house or a recording interface.

And when properly configured, the internal load makes cabinet-free recording and headphone use possible.

You're still generating the sound through a genuine tube amplifier.

CabClone simply gives you additional ways to capture and use it.

HORIZONTAL OR VERTICAL? THERE'S A REAL DIFFERENCE

This is something I think we should communicate across the Northeast Music Center website because you offer both configurations.

Choose the Vertical Rectifier 2x12 when you prioritize upward projection, a narrower floor footprint, and the monitor-like effect of the angled upper speaker.

Choose the Horizontal Rectifier 2x12 when you want the traditional wide Rectifier cabinet format with massive punch, low-end authority, and the design lineage of the bottom half of MESA's oversized Rectifier 4x12.

Neither is simply "better."

They provide two different ways to build an exceptional Badlander rig.
